Reviews
My 18 year old daughter and I read the book when it first came out, and then we read the entire book (minus the sex scenes) out loud to my husband and 19 year old son while we drove home from our Outer Banks vacation last summer. They loved it!
The themes and general story line are pretty close to the book. Ira and Ruth's house and Greensboro in the early 30s were spot on. I enjoyed the description of the ranch much more in the book. Most of the time on the ranch was spent indoors...more on that later. The actors' portrayal of Ira, Ruth, Sophia, and Luke were perfect! However, the character development for Ira and Ruth far surpassed that of Sophia and Luke. I would have much rather seen more evidence of true love developing between Sophia and Luke than the 15+ minutes of sex scenes and nudity. I was also hoping to see what kind of actor Clint Eastwood's son was, but really I just got the impression that he only got the part because of his physique. Honestly, there was more genuine relationship (friendship) developed between Alan Alda's Ira and Sophia, which was different than in the book.
After reading the book, my daughter dreamed of dating a cowboy. Her dreams kind of came true, and she giggled during the scene when Luke showed up to Wake Forest's campus for his date with Sophia dressed in his cowboy shirt and big belt buckle...just like her bf does.
