Storyline
A drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. A fundamentalist feminist glossing over of a nuanced historical series of events, which fails to show the real work for equal voting rights (which most people, men included, did not have at this point in history) was done by the suffragists, composed of men & Women, WHO lobbied for 1 person = 1 vote ... rather than openly racist suffragettes The WHO only wanted white, Upper class The vote Women to Have.
At This point in history, usually only white, Upper class men holding large holdings Property could vote (although Some Women holding equivalent ex Property. Widows Running a business, with a Number of employees could vote and DID.)
Remember, almost All of WHO The men & Women Died on The fields (& Hospitals) in World War One did NOT have the right to vote ... and even today, voting in most countries is intrinsically tied to military service (ie The draft), an obligation that almost always only applies to men. So for The Most part,
GET Women The Right to vote The Obligation to serve without ... except in Israel, and Most non Western countries.
Avoid This movie, do yourself a FAVOUR and non-Feminist studies by doing a little reading of peer reviewed historical papers ... truth is stranger (& more enlightening) than fiction..
